Desert Locations and Information

A large percentage of the Australian mainland is desert area. Depending on what source you go by it is in excess of 18% of the total mainland area.

Around 70% of Australia has an annual rainfall of less that 500 mm, which makes it a very dry country overall. The total areas of each desert vary according to where you find your information so the areas mentioned below are close enough to give you an idea of their enormous size, and the sizes of one against the other.

The largest of the deserts is The Great Victorian Sandy Desert, covering an area of almost 350,000 square kilometers, or around 4.5% of Australia, it stretches from the southern regions of Western Australian well into South Australia.

The second largest desert region, covering an area of around 270,000 square kilometers, is The Great Sandy Desert is in Western Australia and stretches across into the Northern Territory.

Even though the Simpson Desert is probably one of Australia's best know deserts, the Tanami Desert in the Northern Territory beats it into third place at 185,000 square kilometers.

Then comes the Simpson in Central Australia at 177,000 square kilometers. The Simpson Desert has become one of Australia's most popular desert trips.

The Gibson Desert in Western Australia follows the Simpson desert in size at 156,000 square kilometers and is flanked on its northern edge by The Great Sandy Desert, on its west by the Little Sandy desert and on its south by the Great Victoria Desert.

Next is the Little Sandy Desert, also in Western Australia, at 112,000 sq km, followed by the Strzelecki Desert in South Australia at 80,000.

The smallest of the well known Australian desert regions is the Sturt Stony Desert in South Australia at a mere 30,000 sq kilometers, which is still a big area but tiny, or less than 10%, in comparison to the Great Victoria Desert .
