| Please
Note - Some of the pictures on this page were taken during flood
conditions in March 2012 and the areas are unlikely to be flooded
during other trips, although, depending on the weather, it is possible
We
will travel through several desert regions
and National Parks during the trip including the Strzelecki Desert, the
eastern fringes of the Simpson Desert, Sturt Stony Desert, Sturt
National Park,
Innamincka Regional Reserve, Coongie Lake National Park, the
southern fringes of the Channel Country, a section of Lake Eyre National Park and part of the Flinders Ranges.
At
Cameron Corner you will have the
opportunity to be in three states at once where New South Wales, South
Australia and Queensland all meet you can also view the Dingo Fence,
which stretches accross much of Australia and which is longer than the
Great Wall of China.
At
Merty Merty you will view the spectacular red dunes as we travel
through the Strzelecki Desert on our nothwards journey towards the
Queensland border and beyond, although at the moment the red dunes are mostly covered in green grass.
Along
the way, and between places, we will do the well known
Strzelecki and Birdsville Tracks. There may even be a chance to do some
of the original Strzelecki Track as well as a bit of the Inner
Birdsville. Both have been more or less impassable recently becuase of
the floods and water damage.
You will have the chance to visit historic sights such as the Dig Tree, Cooper Creek, possibly the Cooper Creek ferry and
others.
Whilst
in Innamincka hopefully a day trip will see us visit the
absolutely outstanding Coongie
Lake and Coongie National Park with its very diverse and beautiful
scenery, bird life, flora and
fauna, which is situated in the Innamincka Regional Reserve.
The access road is currently closed (May 2012) but may be open by
the time we get there.
Coongie
Lake is the main lake in a complex ecological system of 25 lakes, each
with individual names, and collectively known as Coongie Lakes.

This
World Heritage listed area, which is definately one of the highlights
of this trip, is often overlooked by other tourists and tour operators.
As we travel north on our departure from Innamincka we will again travel through
the eastern regions of the Strzelecki Desert with Birdsville as our next destination.
Whilst in Birdsville we will travel into the eastern fringes of the Simpson Desert where you will have the opportunity to
attempt Big Red, the iconic, and biggest, sand dune at the
eastern end of the Simpson Desert, the actual drive on the dune is optional and it shouldn't actually be that hard.
Big Red's official name is Nappanerica Dune, doesn't sound as enticing as Big Red does it?
From
Birdsville we head south to Marree, the Oodnadatta Track and a trip to
Lake Eyre South before heading west again via the Flinders Ranges and
our final destination of Broken Hill.
